The last several years have seen an increased awareness of yoga in the Western hemisphere. For over 5000 years, the benefits of yoga in areas of toning and heart and lung health have been proven in our Eastern counterparts. Many companies are now sponsoring yoga fitness programs, realizing that relaxed employees are healthier and more creative.
What is Yoga?
The word “yoga” is derivative of the word, “yoke” – meaning to bring together. Yoga benefits the bringing together of mind, body and spirit for stress management and spiritual transformation. As an instructor of yoga classes in Orlando, Celeste Cruz teaches the yoga practice of slowly stretching the body into specific poses while keeping breathing slow and controlled. A sense of well-being, connectedness and transcendence is achieved through stimulation of lung-capacity and circulation.
Health Benefits from Yoga
Regular yoga class participation reduces cortisol levels, provides relief from allergy and asthma symptoms, lowers blood pressure and heart rate, reduces anxiety and muscle tension, and has been proven effective in cessation of smoking and slowing the aging process.
Bikram Yoga instructors must undergo a training and certification process in the “hot yoga” techniques of founder BikramChoudhury. In Bikram Orlando yoga classes, Celeste will guide students through a dialogue of 26 postures and twobreathing exercises. Ideally, Bikram Yoga is practiced in a 105 degree heated room with a humidity of 40%. Profuse sweating is induced, which rids the human body of toxins. The body is kept warm and flexible at these temperatures. Bikram Yoga is designed for the beginner and the advanced participant. During the 90 minute class, novice learners are encouraged to take numerous breaks if they are feeling lightheaded. While performing a particular “asana” (or posture), circulation is cut off temporarily from certain parts of the body. This restriction causes more blood to be pumped by the heart in reaction to the shortage. The freshly pumped blood is called “extension”. Once the individual comes out of the posture and the asana is complete, newly oxygenated blood rejuvenates the arteries that were compressed. Infections, bacteria and toxins are released through the influx of blood and volume change.
